THE AREA

Mae Sot is a border town in North West Thailand that sits on the east side of the Moei River which separates Thailand from Myanmar and the township of Myawaddy. This is an area facing great issues with Burmese migrants escaping or being trafficked across the border into Thailand, often coming from extremely difficult and life threatening situations.

As you can see from the photos of parents helping to repair the school after recent bad weather they are a great tight knit community but they lack the funds to get a durable school in place with proper sanitary facilities etc

THE CHILDREN AND THE COMMUNITY

In a similar situation to the children we helped in Phuket, the Burmese in this area are there largely illegally and as a result have no access to state healthcare, housing or education.

Whole generations of children are missing out on school entirely. They are however accepted by the Thai government and can stay, often in refugee camps.

THE PROJECT

Having successfully built school projects on both sides of the border serving the Burmese community, we are now in a position to build a new project.

Working with trusted architects we planed to build a new school to replace a deeply run down, unsafe and impractical building in a small community to the south of the town.

This current school named The Emmanuel School is located on this site. The school serves more than a 100 children. It has temporary classrooms with zinc roof and fabric netting on the sides and a leaf and bamboo dining hall. The classroom doors and walls are from salvaged, cheap materials. The old school needed to be repaired after most storms and heavy rain, it is dangerous and not fit for purpose.
