To end all harmful practices towards girls (child, early and forced marriage, taboos on regular menstruation).
To empower and promote the social, economic and political inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion.
To ensure equal opportunity to girls/adolescent laws, policies and practices.
This quarter saw our weekly TV show reach millions of people, sharing our progress and spreading the importance of girls empowerment throughout Nepal. Our girls have been taking part in interviews on national television with high ranking political figures and members of business. Two years ago these young women would not speak up at home or in school and certainly not to men, to see their progress now is nothing short of amazing and a testament to their courage and commitment.
We continue to have large media coverage throughout Nepal in national newspapers, radio and TV. Our program is of great interest to governments and organisations of other regions. Our team and girls are travelling to more remote areas and sharing their work, increasing our impact all the time.
KEY EVENTS THIS QUARTER
BROCHURES
We published 4500 position papers and distributed 985 during the launching of the paper, the remaining copies were distributed during other events. The need and demand for the position paper on the situation of girls in rural areas of Nepal is increasing all the time with communities showing great interest in the content. We also created, printed and distributed a hand brochure on “Cyber Bullying” for providing awareness on the safety and prevention from cyber-crime and associated social issues.
HOARDING BOARDS
We continue to add more hoarding boards throughout the region explaining our work and the benefits of girls empowerment and messages on the abolition of archaic treatment of young women, particularity during their period. Hoarding boards are a major source of information in rural areas and highly effective way of reaching the community at large.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Our girls with the help of professionals ran workshops with hundreds of children and adults in their respective communities covering the following topics this quarter:
Tihar Cultural program, Motivational Training, Child Right Training, Gender Equality, Self Defence, Quiz Competition, Awareness Program on Cyber Bullying, Menstrual Health and Hygiene, Ending Violence Against Women, Program Against Gender Violence, Leadership Training.
GIRL FRIENDLY TOILETS
Unhygienic, unisex pit latrines are a main driving factor for adolescent girls missing school during their period. We put a great deal of effort into creating safe and clean spaces for these young women, and also supply sanitary towels and relevant education from nurses and educational signs in the toilets.
The toilet construction activities of Kumarwarti Secondary School Devchuli 13 is going smoothly. We also put an agreement in place for the construction and maintenance of girl friendly toilets in three more schools in the region. This year the priority for renovation or construction of toilet is given to the primary school based on need. The previous year the priority was given to secondary level school.
RADIO COVERAGE
Our local media partners, Kawasoti F.M. and Happy FM continues to air two episodes per month, covering the issues of girls and promoting girls empowerment, and the activities done under the GEP. The program focuses on ending child and early marriage, menstrual hygiene, use of homemade sanitation, empowering girls through awareness, leadership and capacity building training, health, and creating girl friendly Devchuli municipality. Radio is a key tool for spreading our work and widely accessible in rural communities.
